I think there's a pretty easy way to implement this using existing systems. Basically, add a building which lets you change the totem of a disciple to a totem which is set at construction (even better if that building looks like the animal you chose). Upgrades could then give you a chance to roll a better quality version of the totem. This gives players more customization options which is good. It also doesn't devalue the rng of totem quality/type since you will probably want a couple of other totems for synergy purposes (or just because they are high quality).
